When is the Best Time for a Newborn Photo Session?

One of the most common questions I get as a family photographer is, “When is the best time to schedule a newborn session?” You’ve probably heard that the ideal time is within the first two weeks after birth. This is because newborns tend to be sleepier and more flexible, making it easier to capture those curled-up, posed shots.
But here’s the thing—that only applies to posed newborn photography.
My Approach:
Natural and Baby-Led PhotographyMy style is all about capturing natural moments, avoiding stiff or unnatural poses. Because of this, we have more flexibility when it comes to scheduling your session. Instead of focusing solely on a specific age window, I consider the needs of the whole family. My goal is to create a relaxed and enjoyable experience for everyone, especially mom.
Having a newborn is a beautiful yet overwhelming time, and I never want moms to feel pressured to schedule their session immediately after birth. Rest, recovery, and feeling comfortable are just as important as capturing those first memories.
What If Your Baby Is Older Than Two Weeks?
If you haven’t booked your newborn session within those first two weeks, don’t stress! You can absolutely have a beautiful newborn session when your baby is one or even two months old. Some of my favourite images come from sessions with older newborns—capturing tender moments like:

Mommy snuggling her baby close
Siblings bonding and showing their love
Heartfelt family connections
And if you love the idea of a sleeping baby, we can schedule the session around your baby’s natural nap time to capture those peaceful moments.
It’s About the Moments, Not Just the Age
While a sleepy newborn is adorable, there is nothing wrong with capturing your baby awake, stretching, or even letting out a little cry. These are real, genuine emotions—part of your baby’s journey and story. The most important thing is that you and your family feel comfortable, relaxed, and present in the moment.
So, if you’re worried that you’ve “missed” the newborn session window—you haven’t. There is no perfect age, only perfect moments waiting to be captured.
Whether your baby is a few days, a few weeks, or even a couple of months old, I’d love to help you capture these fleeting moments. Let’s create timeless, heartfelt images that tell your family’s story.
